The Importance of a Father in a Young Person’s Life

A Wheels Story…

Research tells us that boys model themselves after their father’s character. Boys will seek approval from their fathers from a very young age. As human beings, we grow up by imitating the behavior of those around us; that is how we learn to function in the world. If a father is caring and treats people with respect, the young boy will grow up much the same. When a father is absent, young boys look to others to set the “rules” for how to behave and survive in the world. When there is no positive adult male influence young boys and young men often look to their peers in deciding how to behave and this often leads to trouble!

Daniel* has been involved in YFC Wheels for the past few years. His parents divorced when he was very young, and he hardly ever sees his father. He will tell you he wishes his father was present as he faces life’s challenges. He will also tell you the YFC Wheels Program has made a major difference in his life.  When asked what he loves about Wheels, he immediately responded “the adult leaders are awesome! I know they care about me and they have helped me learn a lot about cars and about how to live my life.  I really enjoy the shop talks and discussion time when we learn about God from the Bible.  I’ve also learned a lot about fixing cars. The leaders are good mechanics, and they are helping me learn skills I will use my whole life.”

Not only do our adult mentors provide a fatherly example to the kids we work with, but they also point these young men to the Heavenly Father who shows all of us how to not only survive, but to succeed in all of life!
